Trans. fluid for an A

(quoted from post at 01:29:55 09/27/08) Hello, wondering what I should use for trans. fluid for my A and how much. Thank you, Joe

I don't think the book says how much. With the trans drained look one the left side of the trans gear box between the left fender and the gear box. You will see the left wheel brake rod and there should be a plug behind that. Remove that plug and open the fill plug on top of the trans by the shift lever and fill till the oil runs out level hole. You want 80 - 140 or just 80-90 EP gear oil. I use the 80 - 140 in my '53 SA.

I wouldn"t want to be running hy-tran in a farmall A. Hy-tran is super expensive because it was designed to lubricate high torque gear trains while still being thin enough and having enough anti-foaming additives to work in high pressure hydraulic systems. Hytran isn"t necessarily better; just different. Gear lubricants are chosen based on the pitch-line velocity, surface finish, and the operating temps it is expected to run in. Slower speed gear trains with poorer surface finishes require a thicker oil, otherwise the lubricant will drip off the teeth before it ever reaches the mesh or the surface pits and peaks will be tall enough to "poke through" the oil film, wearing on the meshing gear (also called boundary layer lubrication). This isn"t a big deal for the later tractors (06 and up), as they have pressure lubrication supplementing the splash lubrication in the rear end with tubes to lubricate the rear end gears. Running hytran will result in a louder transmission that will have a tendency to coast forever until you can shift gears. Stick with 80-90 unless you put in ground gears and are planning to run road gear continuously. It won"t hurt anything unless you are doing 100% load pulling in first gear, but you will likely be happier with 80-90.

The book calls for five pints in the tranny, and top it off with another half-pint if you have a belt pulley/PTO.

That should be five QUARTS in the tranny and a full pint added through the pulley/PTO if you have one. The pans at the bottom of each of the final drives take about a pint and a half each.

Dorry about thatI'll be alright if I get another cup of coffee into me.

I ran HyTran in my Super A once and it started seeping out at the gaskets. It is much thinner than 90w. I ended up switching back to 90w gear oil and no more seeping.
