Hi all, the 1956 300 is running great, but now I think we need to split the tractor and re-do the clutch :( My Dad was trying to plow with it today and the clutch just slips. I've never yet rebuilt a clutch, so can someone tell me what parts are making it slip? Bad pressure plate or disc?? Or?? Since the 300 needs the clutch done, my Dad plowed for the first time with his 1944 Farmall H with a Allis Chalmers 2 bottom plow. We were suprised how good the H pulls that plow! That H has a lot of power. The plow on the 300 is a IH mounted on the Fast Hitch. If anyone can give me any info on rebuilding the clutch, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you,
Andy.

Before doing anything make sure to adjust your clutch, make sure you have free play at the pedal. If this does not help you need to split tractor and replace both pressure plate and clutch disc. I would put a new throw out bearing and a pilot bearing while your in there. Check rear engine seal and transmision seal, nothing messes up a new clutch like leaking oil. Good luck !

the clutch linings are worn probabley to the rivits. that will make it slip under load.you will need to get a new clutch disc, someplaces can reline them if the disc is ok and the springs not broken.you should have the flywheel and pres.plate resurfaced. check your throw out brg.and pilot brg.either repack with grease or replace.you will need a pilot shaft to line up the disc before tightening pres. plate to flywheel.once together keep proper free play adjustment.you know the rest.oh, and make sure rear seal is not leaking.

Thanks Bill, I did check all the clutch and TA linkage adjustments a few days ago and they are all good. Guess I need to split the tractor. Maybe we can fix the TA at the same time, the TA does not work.

Thanks,
Andy

Replacing both clutch and TA while you've got it apart is an excellent idea. It would really suck to go through all the work of replacing the main clutch only to find out that it still won't go because the TA clutch is what was slipping.

These mechanical TAs hold out far longer in direct when the TA side goes out, but they do get to the point where the tractor won't go in direct either.

if the pilot bearing was ever greased too much it may be slipping because of that. I just had a clutch slipping problem fixed on my 23 Olds 1 ton truck. It would slip sometimes going up hills and also was hard to get in gear because it was dragging. Book said to flush out the clutch with kero. Brake cleaner would be better. Did it and by golly it works like a new one now. Whewww! I thought I was going to have to pull it apart which might be as tough as splitting a tractor and then go through all heckfire trying to find parts for it.
