I have a makita chain saw / 73cc / ex sacks delmar saws. The shop could not get it to run and they said their too busy to fool around with it. It will not run, has good spark, the shop said I am loseing compression. Can someone tell me how to find were I am loseing compression I would guess the head is my problem. Thankyou now for those who can help me out. A new carb kit was put in also

The rings, cylinder, and valves determine good compression. Hold your thumb over the plug hole and see if it has any compression while cranking the engine over. Hal

I never saw a chain saw with valves yet. If it lost compression, chances are the piston and cylinder are scored. May need a new piston and rings to fix, which may be more than the saw is worth. Try squirting some oil in the spark plug hole & see if it helps.

It could be loosing compression from scored cylinder and piston, or worn out rings. Take a compression gauge, see if you have at least 75# compression, it will start with that low compression, but will have no power, it needs at least 90# compression to have good power.

Actually only reed port engines have reed valves, the newer engines are all piston port engines with no reed valves.

I've got an old Homlite AV20 that is running with only 65 PSI - can't do anything with it but it does still run and start.
