6v or 12v

Not to sound like an idiot, but how do you tell the difference between the two?

6v has three battery cells, 12 v has 6 cells

6v has a positive ground while 99% of 12v has a negative ground

Theirs a number of ways. #1 almost all tractors before say 1960 where 6 volt + ground. #2 if it has a generator on it most likely its 6 volts. #3 if it has an alternator it will be 12 volts. #4 if theres a battery on it and it has 3 caps for water its 6 volts if it has 6 caps its 12 volts

No offense old, you usually have knowledgable answers but the only one you had right this time was #4.
The question was whats the easy way to tell a 6v from a 12v battery and the answer is 6v has 3 caps and 12v has 6.

#1,#2 and #3 are wrong because I have two stock and original 1968 tractors that have 12v neg gnd and they both have generators, not alt.

When you said all tractors I think you just painted with too broad a brush.

460/560 were introduced in 1958 -- 12 volt neg ground. Some of the later 50 series may have been. 12 volt generators were common in the late 50's early 60's.

Very true but thats also why I SAID ALMOST all not ALL so what I said is correct if you read every word. Another one that did not hold true to what I said was some of the diesels but again they stil fit into the almost ALL

Better learn to read. I said ALMOST ALL TRACTORS BEFORE 1960 where 6 volt. You said you have tractors 1968 well I think they are after 1960 RIGHT????? Read first please then answer

What everyone said are all good indications, but the most concrete was it to look directly at the source, the battery. 3 CAPS = 6VOLTS , 6 CAPS = 12VOLTS. Good Luck!

BUt maybe you should go back and read. I said almost all tractors before 1960 where 6 volts and had generators I never said any thing about after 1960 and yes some did have them after 1960 and yes they would have been 12 volts but whats that have to do with before 1960. 6 volts before 1960 12 volts after so YES I WAS RIGHT
