Local guy has this 544 diesel that he needs to sell and has offered it to me for 1000. It has sat for the last 5 years but was said to have run good when parked inorder to fix an electrical problem. History on the tractor is pretty much an unknown so who really knows what repairs are needed. It has 3pt and one rear remote and comes with a semi-rough loader. Appears to be a hydro tractor and not being a IH/Farmall guy how bad can I get hurt at this price?

Hard to say. You are taking a chance with any old tractor that doesn't run, but that's part of the fun, isn't it? That's what I keep telling myself anyway. I would say the biggest thing to be concerned about on this tractor would be the hydro transmission. Could be big bucks if something major is wrong. I would offer him $800, unless you have already dickered him down. The more you have left for buying parts, the better!

Another thing you might want to consider. Judging by the size of the tires and wheels, this is a turf special or low profile tractor, not designed for field work. If you ever have designs on fixing and selling this tractor, this might make it tough to sell.

Diesel engine, gear drive transmission. Does not need the electrical system to run. The electrical system is pretty simple, charging, starting, gauges, and lights.

I have a gas gear drive utility 544. That one looks like a gear drive to me. It isn't a "turf special" or "low profile": just a utility. You wouldn't want to use it for cultivating corn but it is fine for any other sort of field work. It is an ecellent loader tractor with the right loader and some weight on the back.

For $1000 I'd buy it sight unseen just for parts.
