IH 674 - what is this lever?

I went to look at an IH674 that a guy has for sale. Nice tractor. As you sit in the operator's seat there is a lever down by your left foot. Does anyone know what that is? It's down below the range/gear selector. The owner didn't know and he didn't have his manual with him. It's not for the TA is it? He says that this tractor doesn't have one.

Thanks.

Jason

Actually the parking brake is by your right foot. I'm see if I can look it up via the parts website as you suggested.

Thanks.

LEFT side (clutch side) would be the parking brake lever, early tractors it was lift up with hand, kick off with foot, later tractors of this lineage were a ratchet lever with push button release.

RIGHT side (brake side) would be the diff lock pedal.

The TA lever on a 674 would be on the left hand side of the steering wheel, looks like the throttle lever.

Thats the parking brake lever. If the owner didn't know what it was for, then you can pretty much assume that it is non functional(froze up).

You would have no way to stop the tractor from rolling, unless you shut it off and put it in gear. This can be a real pain if you're doing a lot of hooking and unhooking of implements.

Its not an easy fix either. The entire transmission top cover with the three point arms and all needs to be removed. Then there is a brake band inside the tranny that needs to be replaced (no fun to remove either).

Assuming my Model 784 is like the 674, it's got to be the parking brake lever. I agree with the comment that if the owner didn't know what it was, then it probably doesn't work. It's easy to forget it's on as the ONLY indication of its being engaged is a dash light (which after years of use probably doesn't work either). I find myself leaving it on many times - IH should have used a flashing light or audible indicator when engaged with tractor in gear and engine running.
