Sticky Second Gear

Have a 1945 Farmall H that recently developed problems with shifting out of second gear. Okay shifting into gear, and all other gears are fine. Tansmission oil had been pretty low, so had added oil. Problem developed after adding oil. Any ideas?

Like Gene said that is kind of odd. The only thing I can think right now would be something is not lining up right or a fork is bent.. Gene might be right you might have to take the lid off and see what is going on...

I am still processing what this might be. Did you add oil only up to the level plug on the side of the transmission?

I suspect your problem has something to do with the detent on the 2nd and 3rd shift rail detent., but you are going to have to pull the top cover off to see and fix whatever is wrong. The hardest part of getting the cover off is getting the bolts out that are usually rusted into the cover or have heads that are too deteriorated for a socket to work. Cutting the heads off with a torch and heating the cover at the bolt holes, especially the ones on the rear, while driving a putty knife into the gasket joint is about the only way to loosen it up. I've had to do that on two different tractors. If they all just unscrew out normally,
you've got it made. You will need some kind of lift, hoist, or a tractor with a loader to raise the cover because it is extremely heavy. The rails are attached to the underside of the cover. Good Luck!

The shift rails are on the bottom side of the rear end/trans. top. It sounds like there may be rust or crud in the shift rails. There are little "detents" or notches in the rails, with spring loaded balls that snap into the notches to hold it in the right gear. If one of the three rails has crud or rust, it might not work right. Adding oil shouldn't have made the problems worse though. Any way, it sounds like pulling the top off is in order.

Pretty straight foreward. Remove seat and steering post. Patience is a big help here. an engine lift or chain hoist to lift the top off is a help, although my dad and I used to do it by hand.

Good luck, there are no afterburners here, so dont get all fuzzed up looking for them.
