Farmall A Timing

Please excuse my ignorance and lack of experience. I need to know the easiest and most reliable way to get the #1 piston on a Farmall A at TDC. Nothing is removed from the engine except the valve cover and #1 plug. Where are the timing marks? On the crankshaft pulley or flywheel? I do have a manual but it is confusing.

Garry: Timing marks are on the flywheel. If they haven't been looked at in awhile, could be hard to find. I don't even look for them. Just take out number one plug and with finger in hole turn hand crank until you feel pressure. Then get a light and watch piston come to the top. You'll then have TDC.

On my M I took the spark plugs out so that it is easy to turn by hand. Then I got it close to the timing mark and then looked into the plug hole with a flashlight and put it at the highest point it will go. Then turn the magneto to Cylinder number one and put it on. It should be right if your timing mark is right. If you dont have a timing mark it is either right or you need to turn it 180 degrees.

The mark is on the flywheel and is hard to find but thats where it is. You can view it from the opening at the bottom of the bell housing

No--it will still be at TDC, just on the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke.

Zach: What do you mean."or you will have 180 off TDC". There is not pressure out the number one plug hole on the exhaust stroke of a 4 cycle engine.
