WK-40 starter

A friend and i have been working on a wk-40 and needed a starter. Those that have know how scarce they are. He was at an all John Deere auction a while back and bought some stuff that included a starter. It was marked " J D B ", so we assumed that. We got to looking at it later, and wondered how close it was to fitting the 40. By all measurements it would go, but the three mounting holes were 3/8" and the 40 took 1/2" bolts. He drilled the holes out in the starter and we put it on last tuesday night. With a 12 volt battery, it really spins the engine over good. (!!!!) And look at the clearance for the intake pipe from the carb to the air cleaner. My 40 has a reworked w-9 starter on it, and it took some doing to make it fit, plus the air cleaner tube had to be revamped as the clearance was tighter than this. Thought we would pass this on.

any starter from a IHC truck with the FBB engine in it will work. A-6 and bigger truck, plus the ones that rplaced that model.
