Im thinking my front trans bearing is bad----with engine running and clutch pedal depressed all is quiet----release clutch pedal in neutral or in gear and it gets pretty noisey, everything works good. Is this a difficult repair?
I also need to know what manual to order next for general repairs, I dont want a seperate book for every unit, just a good shop manual. The operators manual I ordered from this site was a dissapointment-----the illustrations are such poor quality that I cant even make out what half of them are----who has better books?
Thanks----Bob S.

I would guess the inpu tshaft bearing is bad. Easy enough to get at after removing the top cover, some gears, and the drive shaft coupler. I say easy enough ha ha, but just takes time.

It is not to hard you just have to take your time. Either way if its a gear or bearing you still have to go inside. I agree with arod chances are its a bearing.. You'll have to take everything off the top, i.e. belt pully, seat, gas tank. I use the parts manual.. It has exploded views of the parts and the part numbers. You can get it from Binder Books. Make sure you have a hoist to lift the top off its real heavy and saw horses to set it on.. The shift forks will come with the top. When puting it back on just make sure the shifter and the shifting forks are in neutral and the same with the gears and it will slide right back on.. The key to the job its taking your time.. Good luck.

You never know sometimes even after you look. Sever al years ago the front transmission shaft pilot bearing went out on my Super M and ball went through several gears knocking small chips out. I decided to just replace bearing and take a chance on it running but when I started it up there was loud knock in transmission so it has set in shed for severasl years. A guy that worked for my Dad and drove the Super M for years back when it was fairly new had been wanting it for some time so I finaly told him he could come get it. Last Monday he came and we had tractor running and knocking in few minutes. Guy who got tractor is pretty good mechanic and he decided that knock was not going to do any more harm than was already done so he drove tractor about 7 miles home. To get to point of my tale I follewed him in my truck and about half way home we stopped on gravel road and he said when we went around sharp curve that tractor quit knocking and sure enough it sounded just like Super M should

Im somewhat confused as to why the tranny top has to be removed to replace the bearing. While Im sure the more knowledgable will correct me, but cant the bearing be changed by dropping the pump and removing the linkaging for the clutch, removing the drive cog on the shaft, removing the 6 bolts and pulling the housing and constant mesh gear and replacing the bearing(s)? Could be wrong, but seems I had to replace that bearing before and thats all I did.

I changed mine by removing pump, clutch and belt pulley gear box. Had plenty of working room through belt pulley drive opening.

YA know now that I really do think about it, I didnt take the belt pulley off. I had palnned to, but I guess I must have hit it right on the shaft and didnt need to.

Crap I never thought of coming in from under.. You have to take it off on the W4 just to get at the seals and bearing.. There is no way from the belly on them.. The H it has to come off to get the lid off. But like I said i never thoguht of having to do it from the belly pan...
