H sputtering problem

My h the other day was sputtering bad and acting horrible like a carb problem. carb was fine as was the fuel flow and spark plugs. Problem turned out to be oil film inside distributor. cleaned it out and it purrs like it should. Am I right in thinking the vent tube from the valve cover to the air cleaner might be clogged? The crankcase vent was cleaned last summer and hasn't seen much dust since.

Bob,

My H will do that when it almost needs a new set of points. If there is a lot of rust and condensation in the distributor, I give the grease fittings a half a shot of grease.

There is no intentional connection between the pieces in question. The vent tube can be checked as a matter of maintenance, but the oily deposits might be from the decomposing grease in the distributor, It goes in it does not come out. I would clean it by disassembling it and flushing all components, relubing and reassembling. The fitting (if it has one) does not lead to the bearing very well. Most oil is not conductive. It is with rust or metal shavings in it! The distributor shaft must have at most .001 slop side to side, JimN
