Farmall A PTO Generator

Has anyone operated a generator with an A? I am thinking about purchasing one for emergency use. I already have the tractor. Can you tell me if I should do this or opt for a self-contained unit?

rbuckel: I have operated a generator with my Farmall 130. It was a big unit designed to require 70 hp if loaded to capacity. The 130 handled it very nicely as long as I kept my electrical load down to a dozen lights, probably 1.5 hp of electric motors.

I bought a 13,000 watt 540 pto model last December, used a H with M & W 9 speed in high side to power it. Engine was not much above a idle and still used plenty of fuel. For fuel consumption reasons I would buy one with its own power source. Dave

I've had my eye on that Harbor Freight 7200W generator head to build my own for my Super A.

Definitely not nearly as efficient as a dedicated standby, but not nearly as expensive either.

A generator normally requires 2hp per thousand watts of output. So, if you buy a 10KW generator head, you would need a 20hp engine. If you keep your output in the 5KW range the little A should run it, but will be expensive due to fuel consumption, I would think.

I have a farmer that runs his with a Farmall C. When doing chores, he just does one thing at a time and gets along fine. The trouble with a self-contained unit is that the carb and fuel system goes bad from setting and when you really need it , it doesn't work. If you have a tractor that you use often, it will be ready to go when you need it.

Your quite right, my generator was sized to give me same output as the power utility. 25,000 watts if I remember correctly. This was 100 cow dairy barn with parlor milking and silo unloaders plus house. With everything working to capacity it would load the 656 diesel. 656 sat just outside milking parlor running generator. If most items were working after dusk, one could hear 656 bark when the 5 hp milk cooler started. Didn't seem to drop the RPMs, I had a cycle meter, and it maintained 60 cycles per min.

I have coupled up 130 when using very little power, it ran this big generator quite well with a few lights and couple small motors. I had a 5 hp on each milker and cooler plus 7.5 hp on each silo unloader. I'll bet the 130 would have died quite quickly if one flipped the switch on couple of those bigger motors.
