H tranny leaking

Took the H out for a shakedown cruise this morning. That new engine with the $400 head, goofy firecrater pistons, just purrs and roars like it should. Just a hint of blue smoke that should disappear when the rings and new sleeves get acquainted.

I have a substantial leak coming out the access hole in the bottom of the tractor. Removed the coupling shaft for the belly pump. Looks like a seal at that forward end of the drive shaft. Behind the flange and in the retainer.

It'd pretty close quarters in there. Can I change that seal (p/n 79634H) working through the access panel hole?

Gordo -

That seal can indeed be changed via the bottom opening.

You'll probably want to drop the belly pump first to give you more room to work (not a big deal to drop the pump but it's HEAVY - have an assistant help you!)

Also as long as you are in there, change the transmission countershaft seal too. If it isn't leaking already it soon will be(!)

To echo Bob M, a floor jack and a helper will be invaluable in getting that belly pump down and back up. Otherwise, all do-able.

Had to do it on my W4 also.. Different way of getting to it but same thing.. But yes it can be done from below. Like everyone else said use a jack to take the pump out.. Don't forget the retianer gasket too. Get them all done while you are in there now.. Good luck. :)

Consensus is to drop the belly pump. Not what I wanted to hear.I'm not sure I want to do that for just that leak. I'll drive it around some more, and see. It didn't leak before I drained, flushed and put new fluid in. Guess it was clogged up with gunk! I knew I should have split the thing when I had the engine, radiator, bolster and gas tank, steering, and everything off.

I'm going to sell it anyway. It just seems so tiny after using the 966 and the SMTA. My Cub Cadet lawnmower makes more noise than the H!
Hoping to get 80% of what I have invested in parts, tires, and materials alone in the thing.Anyone looking for a restored 49 H! I'll even haul it 250 miles for free.

Thanks for the help.

You should be able to do it in an afternoon even with breaks. It is really not that hard to do. I have a 51 H that had a junk rear end when I bought it(lesson learned was don"t buy one with out seeing it move!)and got all new bearings seals and brakes. Lots of $$$ but well worth it now! It has firecraters, smokes just a tad when idling long, has a new saginaw 3point hitch and is good on gas compared to my M which may be for sale since it is too big for what I do. The H has been skidding logs all summer! It also is a dandy bushogger. It will do most chores those big ones will do, it may take longer on big jobs, but for most jobs it will do it on less fuel. Wish I had more room here, I would trade you my 48 M with power sterring live hydros and 3 point.
