H MAINTANCE

Could anyone tell me does the H have an oil filter if so where is it and what are the fluid specs and capacities for engine, transmission, rearend and hydro's
thanks

Yes:
On the right side to the rear of the ignition system (domed metal cylinder). Pull the bolt, get oily, bump the filter housing to unseat, get oily, lift off filter, get oily, clean out groove where the housing fits to the base (needs a dental pic, or similar tool to pick it out, crusty and hardened, put on new filter, put on new sq "O"ring in groove. tighten bolt.
Engine oil 15-40 diesel spec, or 10-40 like a car.
get 8 quarts, and fill to top oil pan petcock, then start and run till pressure, then refill to top petcock.
Get an IT manual, and Owners manual for the remainder, or you will be looking for a long time for the fill and check points. JimN

There are 2 options on filters; long or short.
Measure the height of the filter housing before going to the store.
Get the engine thoroughly warmed up before draining the oil.
There is a small 1/4" pipe plug on the bottom of the filter housing; use a small container (1# coffee can), remove the plug, just slightly loosen the filter housing so some air can get in and the oily mess will be limited.
As mentioned, be sure to get all the old gasket out of the housing groove.

It is a cartridge type. You can get it at the Case IH dealer. Remeber not tighten the oil filter cap bolt to tight or it will crack the top of it and you won't stop it from leaking.. Get all the old gasket out too. Just tighten enough to stop it from leaking...

its a cartridge, as it fits in the filter housing larger hole down.just like mccormick deering wanted it to be. napa, case/ih for filters.

You are correct, but I wanted him to have a bit more on hand, and use the petcock twice to make it right. Just my thinking, JimN

Thats a pretty good plan, especially since its probably a new machine to him.

I was just making sure that I hadnt gotten confused.

Thanks for all the help have the engine oil and filter figured out but what type of fluid do I use in the rearend and transmission and how much does it take?

I have a 48 h and all I use in the tranny/rear end is 80/90 wt gear oil. It is put in through the big plug in the platform just behind the steering post. As for the hydraulics, they use engine oil. I usually use straight 40 wt in mine. the fill tube is about 1 inch in diameter and is under the gas tank on the ignition/spark plug side of the tractor. Should be a dipstick in there once you get the little cap off. It was mentioned before about the engine oil and using 15w40. I wouldn't do that if I were you. Those engines were made before the invention of multi-viscosity oil. They were designed to run with straight 30 weight oil. I use striaght 40 weight in mine. Hope that I was of some help and clarification for you. An H is a great tractor. Enjoy yours and have fun.

So you know, the rear end of the H takes 6 gallons of gear oil, and the belly pump will take 6 quarts of whatever oil you put in it. It was designed to run on the straight 30 wt like Kippster said, but if you swap it around to lots of implements on the farm, you may not want to do that. I have put regular hydraulic oil in mine, and everything seems to work fine.
