I purchased a 300u that from what I hear should have a positive ground system. It has a 6-volt battery and a generator. At the time I purchased, the positive cable from the battery was connected to the starting solenoid, and the negative to the frame. In the time that I have owned the tractor I have not switched from this setup. Questions are, is this ok to run to run like this, if not what kind of damage has been done? Would I cause any damage if I were to swap these wires back around? Does it affect how it runs? Any info? thanks, TB in NY.

Would like to see your 300-u. Think you could post a pic sometime? Good luck with your ground issue. Not familar with IH but interested

I ran into a similar problem on my H recently.

Does the Ammeter deflect to the negative side while running by chance? (I honestly dont know if the 300u has one, but I figured its a safe bet)

Apparently the starter doesnt care about the grounding, and as long as the generator has been repolarized to the correct ground, it will work and charge things just fine as well. Also, your ignition coil should have the wires switched if you intend to run with the negative vs. positive ground.

I switched mine back to positive ground after repolarizing the generator and it is running well.

If you do a search on the positive vs. negative ground, you should find that post thats about three weeks old.

1) As long as its working and charging its okay to run that way

2) If polarity is reversed and a gennys isnt Polarized before start up, the VR can be damaged buttttttt Im unsure it was ever reversed in the first place (or if so maybe it was corretly re polarized) and if its been working n charging okay then the VR must be okay NO HARM NO FOUL

3) If you swap you need to Polarize the genny before start up cuz otherwise it may damage the VR (if it aint broke dont fix it lol) ALSO if you swap polarity and it has an ammeter the leads needs swapped or it will read bass ackwards

4) If its a coil ignition the coil polarity needs to match the battery for best operation i.e. a polarity swap needs the coil leads swapped also. It will still run at the incorrect coil polarity but theres less spark energy. For Neg ground the coil + gets ignition switch switched voltage while - goes to distributor. For Pos ground the - is wired to ignition switch and + to coil

Got it???
