Ok, I tried to search for this in the archives and came up with different answers.

Some say set it one way.

Others say horizontal, which is it?
I will be using a magneto.

I have the engine at TDC

I have tried to look down the oil filler with a mirror and just can't see the marks to line them up, even painted them white.

The link below will take you to my H project page with the 3 positions I have set it at.

Waiting for my front tires to come in so I can roll it out of the both so I can paint the rest of the sheet metal and misc parts.

Thanks for any tips or tricks on getting this set.

Slip the mag into place, (easy enough to do), then rotate the engine and see where the mag trips, OK, early or late, them move the gears a tooth or two, as needed.

Randy, If you are set on that second mark (TDC#1)
and rotate the mag until it is at the number one pole, they should just marry up. Book says at about 45 degrees.

Another note. I remeber when you posted photos of youe new top cover bolts and those rubber/metal washers. I can't find a source for those. Where to order? Nedd enough for two cover plates. Email open

Hey Gordo, I just used standard bolts and bought one of those rubber O
-Ring kits from Harbor Freight to use, not sure if it will help or not. I think I have clear over the tranny deck to stop any waer from getting in ;)

Oh and your email bounced back to me using warbrdog

This is from the CaseIH website parts lookup for the bolts.

Randy,
If you have the standard H4 magneto, the above pictured position is correct. If the serial number on your mag has an 'X' stamped after the serial number, the slot needs to be 90° from this. Also, the X mags only have 15° advance which won't give you the same power at rated rpm. When I snapped the picture on this post, the timing gear cover was not in place and all marks were properly aligned.
