PTO Seasonal Disconnect.

When I removed the bolt to move the seasonal disconnect lever to the rear, on the 54 SMTA the Hytran in the transmission came gushing out at a very rapid rate. I got it back in quickly but couldn't move the lever and all with that fluid coming out.

This can't be normal. What's wrong here?

Gordon: I'd place a pail under it remove the bolt. The oil may have gotten in there sometime the transmission, rear and and TA were overfull. I wouldn't split it until you see what happens after you drain off this initial oil. It might take another 54 years for that compartment to fill again.

Farmalls of that era, most commonly leaked oil from gear boxes as a result of being overfull, even back when seals were new.

Thanks Wayne. After reading your answer I thought I would go drain the cavity and then see how long it took to fill up. Well, after 2 gallons drained out and it was still coming full stream I buttoned it back up. Obviously it's not a "leak" , it's a full blown open system.
Anyone have the answer to this? Would the disconnect clutch even work immersed in fluid?

(quoted from post at 09:15:58 09/15/08) That is a dry cavity; you have a seal leaking somewhere. Some (maybe a lot) dis-assembly required!!

It is a dry cavity only if there is no oil left in the transmission. The lower shaft in the clutch housing runs in oil all the way from the front to the rear. That is how the oil gets to the PTO gears and bearings in the front of the clutch housing.

There should be a blind hole the bolt to thread into. Most likely someone has installed too long a bolt at sometime and broken the the top off the hole exposing it to the oil reservoir.
