i have 2 F-12"s a 1937 that has a cracked block but is free. and i have a 1938 that is good but stuck. I would like to fix the 1937 and use the other for parts.should i get the engine welded or use the other engine i would like the numbers to match. I am unsure what is best.

Why not fix up both tractors?? If you want to only fix up one, just leave the original engine in it and weld the block. I don't see many F-12's around anymore. If I ever find another F-12, I would not part it out.

Good Luck!

S.,
At least half the F12/14s have a cracked block on the left side above the fuel pump. This is an external crack in the water jacket. If this is your crack it can be fixed many ways without welding, generally shallow v-grinding and an epoxy filler.

My 1937 O-12 had a crack in the water jacket just above the fuel pump. The service engineers had to hot tank the engine 3 times to get the old sleeves out, then had the crack welded, cannot see where it was now. Seems to be a very common problem or weakness with these engines. I have seen many with copper patches riveted on or other fixes.

My F12 was cracked and welded when I got it and it still seeps some, but I use it a lot hauling firewood out of the woods and the occasional logs to skid. I would say that more are cracked than not.
