Can someone explain to me what the torque amplifier (TA) is on the older Farmalls (e.g. 706)? In looking to buy a tractor with a TA it sounds like I need to make sure that is working properly. How do I do that? Is that something a mechanic could check? The other tractor I"m interested in is a 674. Does that have a TA or did IH go to a different design?

Thanks for any insight.

Jason

I have a 674 Diesel, they don't have a T/A it has been a great tractor for us. But the 706 I believe has more HP the 674 has 67 hp. I have an article on the T/A from Red power I'll find it and get back to you.. But what I do know right now is that its like a planetary gear system. It is after the clutch and before the tranny. I believe its another gear reducer.. I'll find the article. and get back to you today..

Jason, I found the article. The T/A is only ment for sort periods. Its just ment to get you through the rough spot. It has its own flywheel clutch pressure plate and dry throw-out bearing. With the leaver ahead the throw-out bearing is not spinning and the engaged clutch causes the whole T.A. unit to spin as a soild unit with no gear reduction. when you pull the leaver back it release the clutch and the T.A. starts doing its job. There is onething at the back of the T.A. that has to work to make it run in T.A. mode. They call it a over running or "sprag" clutch. It is used to hold the housing with the gears in it still so the gear reduction can happen if it is not working you won't get the T.A. action. If you engaugethe T.A. and you hear a little whine and the tractors stops moving then you have a bad sprag clutch.

I got this info out of Red Power Magazine. Vol23, No3 It has a great atricle on the T.A.'s in it and the next issue says its going to talk about adjusting, rebuilding and where to get parts for them..

Good luck and I hope I have helped :)

A 706 TA has a hydraulically-engaged multiple disc wet clutch and NO T.O. bearing. The information you posted is for the older stuff with a mechanical TA.

Oh cool. Thank you Bob. I was just writing about what I leaned about T.A. from that article. I don't know much about the 706 except that I would like to get one some day.

TA systems Newer hydraulic, or older manual system are reliable and worth every bit of consideration. They can be used for very long periods of time, and are just like a two speed axle with no clutching needed to shift. Our TAs have ~10000 hrs with no issues used as needed. Never ever considered it to be a momentary thing. JimN

The TA is not just for short time use. Dad had a 350 and we spent half the time in the field in low range. Plowing, discing, etc. It ran years that way with no trouble. You just have to keep it adjusted according to the book, and use it correctly.
