2444 hydraulics

Can anyone tell me how to add hydraulic fluid to this tractor. I have a couple of small leaks and the fluid is milky so it needed to be changed but when I went to add fluid to the housing under the seat it would not take any. It overflowed immediately. I tried to fill it by the plug on the top of the housing in the very back right corner. Do I have to remove the plate under the seat, or am I just missing something? Thanks Bob

I have a 444, the plug you described is the fill hole. As you fill through that small hole you need to let air escape, otherwise it will overflow. If necessary you can remove the cover under the seat. that may be where water is getting into your oil, be sure to seal that cover good when you put it back on. The fill hole will only let you fill up to the bottom of the hole and leave some room for expansion within the resivor. If you fill through the cover under the seat don`t over fill.

The plug on the right rear corner behind the seat is for the hydraulics unless you have a front mounted, crankshaft driven pump. Then there is a common reservoir with the transmission and rear housing. The front pump draws oil from the rear end and passes it through an external filter on the way to the pump. The return from that systems enters the normal hydraulic reservoir and then overflows to return to the rear housing.

Thanks, Couple more questions. What is the capacity of the hydraulic system. I have a front mount pump and loader? Also is it possible to put an additional set of lines to the rear? I have a tow behind bush hog that requires hydraulics for height adjustment. I'd like to use this tractor but I don't have the hookups. Thanks again Bob

Yep with a front crank driven pump fill the plug to the right of the grarshift to I think 6 inches below the top of the opening. I believe it holds abour 16 gal overall. If you drain it all and fill it you need to drain the liftbox on the right real, one plug under the rearend and at least one under the tranny. Refill the liftbox first and then the tranny/rearend sump. Also there is a suction screen on the right front of the liftbox for the engine mounted pump. And mine has an aux high pressure filter hanging in front of the gearshift.

as Posted by Owen the lift box does overlfow into the rearend/tranny sump.

You just have one rear remote ?

Mine has 2 rear remotes with one appearing both under left footrest and on rear, the other one only appears under right footrest, but I am replumbing to rear.

Yes you can add remotes, I would recommend checking for remotes and the acttuators at scrap yards. 444 and I am pretty sure 424 rear remote valves and levers will work.

I don't have any rear remotes at all. I'm thinking that the machine was retrofitted w/ the front pump. As near as I can tell I have 2 hydraulic pumps on this machine. 1 driven off the front pulley that runs the power steering, and the other PTO driven off the front that runs the loader. Is there an easy way to get the water out of this system. I don't want to have to do several oil changes to get all the water, that will get expensive quick. Thanks Bob
