magneto switch

I'm restoring my 2nd M. This one was disassembled when I got it so there was not a wire on it. Wiring it back to specs, what does the magneto switch do? I've not got one with this tractor but I'm guessing the switch "interrupts" or "grounds out" the mag?. Do I really need the $50 switch?

No you can just bare the end and then earth the wire when you wish to stop the engine. But I reckon a sw probably looks better MTF

Yes, it grounds the mag to stop engine. Hook wire from it to terminal on side of mag and NO battery voltage needed on a mag! Any switch wired to ground it will work just don't send any voltage to the mag or you'll fry it. Any switch around 50 new might be a good deal as others are asking 75 now. Probably went up and made in chink land?

Very early Ms and Hs had a grounding switch made to be attached to the mag with screws, and be operated by a choke cable type mechanism.
Many of these were replaced with a push pull mushroom switch in the electrical box. These switches are a look alike to the more common point and coil switch, but are way different inside. The Mag switch is a single terminal switch with the switch body (and its connection to the electrical box metal) being the ground. It connects the wire from the mag to ground when pushed in, and opens the connection when out, allowing mag operation.
A point/coil switch has two terminals and one is connected to bat volts on the load side of the amp meter, and the other to the coil. They are not the same inside at all, and if used with one side grounded, will be on when in and off when out. Not too important for an informed operator, as leaving it on when stopped does nothing. But it may cause starting frustration if pulled out to start. A single pole toggle switch with the on off plate reversed, and one terminal grounded will work just aas well. JimN

The magneto switch "kills" the magneto terminal by grounding it. Don't buy a new $50-$75 switch, post a wanted ad in the Classified Ads on the left that you need a switch and you could get a good used one for a lot cheaper. I bought mine (original, used) on eBay for $11.55.
