Help w/ new red tractor

Hey guys,
New to the forum. I currently have a JD 2010 that I think I'm going to shoot and bury in the back field. So I'm in the market for a "new" tractor. Years ago I swore my allegiance to JD, but I'm starting to consider a red tractor because it seems like maybe you get more for your money. I really want(ed) a JD 3020, but no one is giving those away these days. So a local dealer has got a Farmall 706 for sale that has peaked my interest. I need a tractor for plowing snow, brush-hogging, hoping to add a loader later, etc.

I guess my question boils down to are there any IH tractors that are problematic (like the JD 2010) that I should stay away from?

Also, is anyone familiar with the 706? Any typical problems / things to watch out for?

Thanks.

Jason

we had a 706 gas years ago. was a pretty good tractor, however it really did like fuel. be sure the torque is good, and try the shifter to see if it shifts easy. they were prone to wear on the linkages and got to be a pain to shift them.

Yep the JD 2010 and 1010 where a problematic tractors but all tractors have there good and bad points. 706 was a good tractor in its day but as the other guy says they did like to drink a lot. Things like the TA etc should be checked to make sure it works well in ALL gear, make sure the hyds are strong. ETC.

I would look for a 806 or a good 300/350U. Except for the loader, not a fan of 300U w/loaders. Just too much weight for the frame.

i have a 706 and like the tractor very much but CANNOT think it would be a good loader tractor and mine doesnt have a loader but the shifting isnt as easy as some tractors and im 60 years old and have used alot of tractors in my day and the forward and reverse speeds dont seem ever to be handy for a loader unless you change from high and low range all the time just my thoughts

Good tractor, poor shifter. Budget for TA work. As I recall, ours was a smooth riding tractor, seemed like it was always at the fuel stand though.

If you are looking at a 706 diesel they were very good on fuel. As far as shifting it won't be as bad as that 2010 plus you get 2 more reverses.

I am not sure about the 706. I have a 674. Its been good to us.. Ours is Diesel, 67 hp, with a 2250 Mount-o-matic loader. We pulled a 15' dice with it, she had great power. We have a 7 blower on the back for the winter. I heard onetime something about the Hyd on them but I have never had any problems..
