How far will I have to tear down engine to advance magneto timing? (mag is advanced max at lower slot mounting) It will run, have to pull start, spins over faster. My dad thinks timing at gears is a tad slow. THANK YOU Hal for your Help! (We are J.D. 2 cylinder guys, This one's a different color and built a little different, but the principles are the same.)

I wouldn't be so sure the Mag is out of time unless previous owner messed it up. Sounds to me like you need to adjust the valves. It will make all the differance in the world. Try this first before removing the front of the engine.
This site will have more than enough information - www.farmallcub.com
Hope this helps.

Are you sure the mag is working properly. Can you hear it snap?
Set your valves at .015 cold.
Sure you don't have a vacuum leak?

Do you hear the magneto snap twice for every round you crank the engine with the hand crank? If not there is an internal problem in the magneto.
Can you adjust the mag so it snaps when the notch on the crankshaft pulley passes the pointer on front of engine? If not the gears on front of engine are out of time. You can cheat it a tooth at a time by removing the governor and reinstalling it on another tooth to adjust if that is the problem. To properly time those gears, you must remove the front bolster, crankshaft pulley (easy to break), and the front cover.
Is the spark at the plug blue and at able to jump at least 3/8 inch? if not, spark is weak. can come from bad wires, cap, or coil getting weak.
