help with Farmall's

What is the Farmall that is comparable to a Ford 8N. I would like a low profile tractor with a wide front. I have been a Ford guy until now, but I like the Farmall's. Any advice what is comparable?
Thanks

The International 300 utility was meant to be the Ford's competition. Also has more HP and is heavier. Appeared in 1955, I don't know what the Ford model was at the time -- it wasn't the 8N. As to a smaller tractor with a wide front, that would be the Super A or A1, or the Farmall 100/130. No three points, had a 1 point fast hitch. You can get aftermarket 3 points for them -- no draft control, though. Having said that, I would prefer a Farmall C/Super C/200/230. Not low profile, but beats an 8N hands down. Utility tractors (newer) are the International 424,444, etc, which should be quite competitive with the later (mid-60's) Ford utilities.

ih equivalent would be a 300 utility, but if i were you i would look for a 550 oliver. the best utility type tractor ever built.

IH really never built a tractor comparable to the 8N. Their first low profile tractor was the 300 in 54, but it probably weighed twice as much as 8N and had 35 horsepower.

In the series that followed, 300 was replaced by 350 in 1956 and they built a lighter, less hp 330, that got closer to the 8N. That series lasted two years and in 1958 came the 40-60 series. 460 replaced the 350, 340 replaced the 330 and the 240 was the first utility version of the SC, 200, 230. 240 would compare quite favourably with the 8N. It was followed by a 404, bit more hp.

My 2cents. If you can get a wide front end C I think that is the way to go.. They have a good road gear.. I don't know that much about number series yet as Hugh and CNKS are.. But I think the 300 is a newer version of a C.. Don't quote me on that.. I don't have my IH books with me to look it up... But I am glad you are leaving the dark side and getting into Farmalls.... Just kidding with you..

Im definitely a big Farmall fan myself, but as far as a utility tractor goes, you could also look at a Massey Ferguson.

We had a MF 135 with the Perkins 3 cylinder diesel, and that was/is a great machine. Live PTO, 3 point hitch with draft control, power steering, ability to add on remote hydraulics, and just an all around great machine.

But dont count out the farmalls by any means, Im actually looking into buying a 300 myself. Its just that if you are in the market, the MF is a pretty good machine.

The Ford tractor in 1955 was the 600 series e.g. 640, 641. I have a 640. It is a bit larger than the 8N and a bit more powerful. One of the 600 series had live PTO, but certainly not my 640.

if you go newer, into the 70s, then you find more comparable machines: 464, 574, 684, etc. The 5xx and 6xx numbers are about 60 pto hp machines though, I'm not sure on specific model numbers on the smaller machines. Many available in both gas and diesel. The hydraulics and pto leave 8n in the dark ages though. :)
