I have a '51 M that is a very nice, sound, solid tractor. I've missed not having live PTO and power-steering however. Is the 450 just a better M, or were there any disadvantages to the 450 gas?

steve: IH did increase the HP a sizable chunk from M to 450. Added HP tends to make them heavy drinkers. I know we noticed a bit of change between H and 300. 300 was a gas hog alongside the H.

And don't discount the aggravation factor of getting to stuff on the 450 vs. the M, as the original screws and caged nuts--that break loose--make removing the hood panels a major PITA in many cases on the 450. Hood latches on the M are simpler and quicker to operate when you need to.

You do get the live hydraulics and the TA if it's not shot and of course the IPTO I was told once the power steering was an option although all the ones I've driven had it. Ditto on a gas hog however in it's day gas was about .20cents @ gallon. I loved them over our 51M 53SM and our diesel SMTA but I was a young pup in those days, we were trying out a Golden Demo 450 w/4X14's fast hitch my 51M could stay with it pulling 3X14's but I worked on it in Vo-Ag and dad swore it used as much gas as the 450 I didn't care at the time.
