Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with an IH 1566. Tractor will be sold at an auction sale this Saturday and am considering looking at it. Engine has 3500 hrs. and I am not sure if the drive train has been touched. I have heard that the trans and diff are underrated for the hp that the engine puts out. Also I understand that trans only has 12 forward gears unlike 1066 and 1466 with 16. Any thoughs on this. ..............Thanks Rick

Rick: They are a pig on fuel, lap up 10 gph even on relatively light work. I tried one pulling a consertil at a demonstration back in 1976, and couldn't see anymore tractor than my 1066, transmission being the difference.

If I were buying that much hp anymore it would have 8 big tires under it.

They are a horse and will run 150-160 hp easily from the factory (not that 35+ years later that matters) and in the field running 170-180 hp isn't uncommon. As mentioned below you will miss 4th low for feild work. If you're going to putter around with it the fuel gets expensive, but if you put a 30' field cultivator behind it starts paying for itself.

Probably one of the best 2wd tractors IH built as far as getting the power to the ground. Rides nicer and outpulls a 1586. At least that is my opinion. Drawback is the noisy cab.
