63 Farmall 706 6 cyl gas - is there anything that can be done to get a little better gas mileage out of this like a better carb replacement or different cam, timing so on?

relaurain: Anything you try will give very limited results. These have been a gas hog, close to 50 years now. Why anyone bought one new, is beyond me.

If that carb has the electric solenoid on it, most likely it is not functioning properly. Get rid of the solenoid and replace it with a manually adjustable load control screw such as that used on a farmall M carb.

By the stats posted above, looks like the deisel is worse considering the cost of deisel fuel is higher now.

relaurain: I've heard dozens of farmers report 6 gph on those 6 cylinder gassers. I had two 282 diesels, one of them cranking 90 hp and one had to work it awfully hard to burn 2 gph. The other one cranking 65 hp would run at 1 gph, on a 9' haybine. The gassers won't hold a candle to those 282 diesels on steady power either. You folks would be well advised to talk with a few farmers that used these, and put your books on the shelf.

Hugh,

I understand the old saying "believe none of what you hear and half of what you see."

So if I had to choose Nebraska test results or somebody's hearsay. I'll go with the test results.

Nate: The Nebraska tests were quite good, however you can not take them to the field. Besides what you are reading from a book is a condenced reoprt and doesn't tell the rest of the story.

During my farming career my 7 tractors, probably clocked 100,000 hours, maybe be closer to 125,000 hours if I took time to add them all up. That was 7 tractors at same time, I actually owned 19 of them during my career. I never owned a 6 cylinder gasser, however I've heard planty about them from farmers I knew well.

I did own a Farmall 300G and on my 9' NH 460 haybine it would burn 3 gph. My 656D on that same haybine burnt 1 gph. I kept very accurate records of every gallon of fuel used. The 656D was faster and cut 20% more hay per hour than the 300G. I think you can see why my 300 was the last gasser over 30 hp that I used on my farm. My 560D was cranking 90 hp and it was awfully hard to put 2 gph through it, very rarely did it ever happen.

Obviously you have not operated many of these tractors, should try it, would be a good education for you.
