Distillate tank and restoration.

My newly purchased H has a distillate Carburetor, small tank missing and the exhaust manifold has exhaust cement patching with nails sticking out of the patch. In terms of restoration I can go two ways. Seal off the hole in the hood and replace the manifold (do I need to replace the carb?). OR try to put it back to factory.

Any thoughts on which way to go?

Thanks, Scott

Going with a new gasoline only manifold will be easier, cheaper, and provide better performance.

You can use the same carb that's on it now (my H runs fine with a distillate carb).

I think a new manifold is under $150 yet.

Scott,I dont know how particular you are but if it was me,Id change to a new manifold, rebuild your carb. and buy a small starting tank and bolt it in place, you can plumb it if you want and just leave it off

The carburetors are basically the same whether the tractor burned distillate or gasoline, and chances are that the carb you have has already been rebuilt with the gasoline carb kit.

If you search long enough, you might find a used distillate manifold, but there are no new ones. If you want new, it will have to be the gasoline version.

You might find a new manifold for under $150, but you'd better hurry. Anything made of iron is going up in price faster than I can keep up with.

I was told very recently that someone out there was doing a hot jacket conversion on new Gas manifold to make them usable for burning distillate. It may only be rumour though as I have not seen anything specific. Another alternative if you want to burn distillate(the way I would go) is take your manifold to someone who can weld cast iron properly and get it remade. Its a pig of a job but worth it if you want original MTF

Thanks for your thoughts. I am going to rebuild the distilate carb for gas for now and shop for a gas manifold. Also, I will install a small tank for looks. When I come across an old distillate manifold in the future I can return it to it's stock state.
