W9: Finally got it home

Yep, I finally got the W9 moved home. Well, to my buddy's place, but I can drive it home from there. I knew the fuel tank was rusty and it ran long enough to load the trailer. She wouldn't run to back off the trailer, though. Luckily I brought along a 1/2 gallon small engine fuel tank and rigged it up to feed the carb.

I've already pulled the tank to clean it out and reseal it. Man, that is a big fuel tank. I'm used to the H/M tank, but the 9's tank dwarfs them both.

She's a hard shifter, but I'm not planning on any speed-shifting. Also, the 12V conversion was done with an alternator. The starter was replaced and a solenoid used instead of the pull rod. On the upside, I'm convinced the muffler is original: IH part#, and pretty much sounds like a straight pipe.

I'll be getting started on cleaning the tank tomorrow.

Here's a few more pics. Check out the seat. Not original, but comfortable.

that is a nice looking w-9. you will enjoy running that one!! my w-9 also shifts hard, i think its the nature of the beast. just a slow and deliberate shifter. if you need a shifter boot, berkshire equipment has em. i have an extension on my exhaust to get it up higher. if you head into the wind with the short muffler, the exhaust comes right at you. i pull a 14 ft disc with mine, and for a plow a 3-18 oliver is a dandy one for the 9. dualed up with loaded rear tires, its a pulling beast!!!

Wow, I'm jealous! W9's are such sweet looking tractors! I have an H and a W4 myself. It's funny that you mentioned the muffler. I had the same style on my W4 and had the same problem with exhaust in the face. I ended up with a straight pipe (which believe it or not is actually even louder :).

My question is regarding your fuel tank. My H has had problems with rust in the past. How are you going to clean and reseal it? Have you done it before with success? I have a really nice looking tank that's structurally perfect, just rusty inside. I'd sure love to be able to use it.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

J.C. Whitney sells a tank sealing kit, has for years. I used one 10 years ago on my Cub tank. Still looks as good the day I resealed the tank. Well worth the expense. Last I time I ordered a kit it was around $35.

Also, I make sure I use the sediment bowl assembly that has the inlet protruding above the bottom of the tank. I've thought about dropping a magnet in around the inlet.

That sounds pretty good actually. Do you think the kit would be enough for the inside of an H tank?

The tank I want to re-do is one that I"ve already taken off. The sediment bowl pipe was up far enough, but it was still pretty rusty (despite looking good on the outside).

Now the one I"ve replaced it with leaks around the gas cap and one of the baffles inside has fallen off, so making the first one work is getting more and more attractive.

That looks like a fun new toy, the 9 series is my favorite aside from the cubs. I had a 1950 w-9 and when i got it the shifting was really hard, the forks in the tranny top ended up being bound up and bent. I ended up swapping out the whole trany top and steering box off a WD-9 and it shifted a lot better but still not as easy as an H or M.
