My friend has a Cub tractor with no tag.All he can find is the engine casting # which is 355 741 R4.What year would it be.

North, There is a serial # stamped into the side of the moter block on a machined flat area. If I remember it near the carb. oldiron29

there should be casting dates on the engine block, torque tube, hydraulic reservoir, rear end etc. it will look like number*number*letter. it will correspond to month*day*year. the letter varies by year, ie q=1947, z=1954, a=(1931 and) 1955.

North: Any IH number ending in R followed by number or numbers is a part number and in most cases it does not date the tractor, other than rare parts used one year only. I doubt if a Cub has any of those, it changed very little over the years.

On that engine serial number, not certain on the Cub, however all other IH had the machined flat surface just below number 1 spark plug on the right. Since the cub is a flathead that may not apply. It will be a machined surface with stamped digits rather than cast in place.

Bill was correct but a bit skimpy, U & T were both used in 1950 and V was not used. Other than those exceptions you just go forward or back from U & T in 1950

hugh, i was just saving on typing. ;)
guy fay's book has T listed for 1950, with U and W for 1951. no V was used, as you said.

Bill: I knew your type finger was ailing. I don't know where my source came fom on U. I tend to think it was never used either, I've never seen one. Either way we both took care of the two extra letters.
