finally got my f-20 up and running, but with a problem. runs at idle great, even throttles up without a cough! good so far. get on and drive, and runs fine for a bit, then coughs and backfires. push in on clutch, and speeds up fine, just dont want to be taken for a drive i guess. set points, gapped plugs, and hand cranks great. just dont want to go. any ideas on this one? i would really love to take the old gal for adrive around pasture, but just cant.

Make sure there is a good clean flow of gas to the carburetor. Check the carb adjustments, if they are fine, its probably time to rebuild the carburetor.

Sounds like a fuel issue. Not sure how that old girl is setup but if there are any filters anywhere in the fuel system make sure that their good and clean. The float might be sticking too.

Were you sure to put the primer cups back in the head/ make sure they are tight? This will reduce both the compression and also reduce the fuel flow makeing it appear to starve for fuel. These thread down though the valve cover and are alongside of the oilers. They are a funnel shaped valve on a piece of 1/8th inch pipe. I failed to put a set of these back in a tractor many years ago when I was a young-un, it would spit and sputter just like you say yours does.

My F-20 does the same thing when the gas get's to low. I guess with the gravity flow fuel it has to have so much pressure to keep the gas flowing to the carb. Let us now what the problem is. Bill
