I've got astuck hub on a 1466that we've tried heating putting a portapower behind the hub driving it with a sledge hammer all in vain to get the lock loose from the axle. Short of cutting it off is there a way to get it loose? it is the one with the bolt through the wedge not like the older H,M, 806 hubs where the casting was clamped on with 2 bolts out and 2 in.

Caterpillar Guy: there is a special tool for removing those, it could be on the other wheel. When those tractors were shipped new, the removal tool was clamped to one wheel.

Those wedges are tightened to 600 ft lbs. and if that tight you will beat you heart out with a hammer. A hammer will work if they are only at roughly 200 Ft lbs. 1466 will also break them at 200 ft lbs.

Hello,
I have pulled alot of wheels some go easy and some don't want to go. I am sure you have tryed this already but I roll the tractor so the wedge is on top loosen the bolt about a 1/2 inch and hit the bolt head square and straight as hard as you can with a big sledge hammer. I also have loosed the bolt and drove the tractor around when it goes you will hear it pop, then you tight it back up and drive it to the shop
Good luck Ed

Ed: Your advice will lead to, axle bearing replacement. Got that right from an IH technician, plus he claims it wont work if wedges are tightened to 600 ft lbs.

if you have a owners manual it will show you the procedure. you don't hit on the bolt you hit on the top of the axle with the bolt drawn up 600 foot pounds. with the tool that hugh mentions clamped over the hub properly. you should really have the manual so you can see the pictures to do this.

Hello Hugh,
There is alot of tractors around here with out the tool. my advice was for removing a wheel and tire with the tractor on the ground when you hit the bolt head the tire takes the shock. if you had the axle in the air then the wheel bearings would take the load and you might hurt some thing. the object to getting it off is to get the wedges apart or knock the inside wedge out.
Thanks Ed

I just fought a 1466 like this. The innner wedge was stuck...TIGHT!!!! We tried everything short of using the porta-power.

What worked for us was to spin the outer wedge half off of the wheel (it will unscrew completely from the back half). We then used two air chisels with blunt points to "rattle" the stuck wedge. After a few minutes of doing this, the wedge came loose. We had NEVER seen a set as tight as this.

We started out using the U-shaped tool (like the manual stated) and the wedge was so tight it stated to bend the two 7/8" NF bolts that hold the tool halves together.
