M magneto (orange or white spark)

When I mowed some hay with the M (and broke the mower's shear pin) two years ago, the carburetor was adjusted in such a way that the throttle could not be used, and the engine seemed to be running a bit too fast. It has only run once since then, and that was when I adjusted the carburetor to get the throttle to work. Last year, I tried twice to start the M, but I couldn"t get it to run. Before trying to start it, I checked for a spark by disconnecting the coil wire from the distributor cap and putting the end of the wire near one of the clips that hold the distributor cap on. When I turned the fan, it made an orange spark. I tried the same thing today, and this time I got a white spark. Do you think the reason it wouldn"t run was a magneto problem? If it is a problem with the magneto, what should I do about it?

The spark should be blue. Make sure the points are clean and set correctly and be sure the coil and condenser are in good working condition.

I sure dont worry about the color of the spark just does it have any spark. You need to get the throtle lever working so you can adjust the speed as thats why it wont start good.

I got the throttle lever working so I could adjust the speed the last time it ran, about two years ago. Last year, after I had gotten the throttle to work, I couldn't get it to run. I had no trouble getting it to start when I couldn't adjust the speed.

Throttle linkage at the point where the governor link attaches to the carb can be a problem. I'm not sure what was wrong with the throttle, but speed adjustment issues can also cause hard starting. Did it work well after the linkage repair? JimN

I don't think there was any problem with the linkage. The throttle wasn't usable because the throttle stop screw was screwed in too far. When I unscrewed that, the engine started repeatedly speeding up and slowing down on its own. I was able to stop it from doing that by adjusting other screws on the carburetor (I don't remember exactly how I adjusted it.) After that, the throttle did seem to work properly.
