Farmall 300 Hydraulics Not Working

Hi all,
My Dad's 1956 Farmall 300 has been having some hydraulic problems lately. It has the fast hitch and a Paulson loader on it and we are having problems with the loader and the fast hitch. The problem is sometimes the loader and fast hitch will not raise up. If I move the hydraulic control levers, nothing at all happens. Then sometimes the hydraulics will work fine, but most of the time they don't work. What do you think could be wrong?? I was told that there could be a spec of dirt in the hydraulic system, what do you guys think? What should I check??

Thanks!

Andy

hey andy, Dad and I finished our 350 and it had poor hydraulics, we replced most of the critical o-rings and it works fine now. you may need to 1. check o-rings under the sreering column
or have hydraulic pump tested. does the loader come down when parked in the air? then seals may be a problem.

Try the simple stuff first. Check the suction screen in the reservoir. Make sure the reservoir is full of hydraulic fluid, and that the fluid is reasonably clean (not milky white).

If the above aren't the problem, giving us some more informataion will help. Do you have factory power steering (adds some more problem possibilities)? Do you notice differences between when the tractor is cold and warm? How about surging? Anything strange or unusual about your system and/or its operation -- other than it's not working properly?

Sometimes a spec of dirt will get into the valving and cause that symptom. If it has Power Steering, and the steering goes dead, I would suspect screen issues, or an air leak into the suction side.
If it continues to steer well, The priority valve might be sticking. JimN

Thanks, I'm thinking it may be a spec of dirt in the system. What part of the hydraulic system do I have to take apart to check? It does not have power steering.

Andy

Temp makes no difference, no power steering setup, The oil level is on the full mark on the dipstick. The oil is not milky.

Thanks, Andy

The pump is working fine because the loader and fast hitch work great when the hydraulic system "wants to work".

Thanks,
Andy

Andy,

You need to check the intake screen in the hydraulic reservoir. I have the 300 Utility, on which checking the screen is a big deal; on the Farmall it's supposed to be easy, just four bolts if I remember correctly.
