When i start my SMTA it will run without the choke on but then it will try to kill so i pull the choke, it will run for a little bit then all a sudden, it will try to kill. Almost like it ran out of gas or just lost spark. This will happen about every 5 seconds or less. Before it dies it will start going again and it will do this until it is warm. Once it is warm i have no problems. I got new plugs put in it. Runs perfect when warm.

Whats the problem?

Thanks

I think it is likely to be lean mixture.
The idle mixture screw Highest screw that is not Idle speed screw, turns in to richen, out to lean.
I would suggest turning it in 1/2 turn at a time. while it is doing it to see if it helps. Turning out the load screw in 1/4 turn increments may also help, but if it runs very well warmed up, only take it about 3/4 turn out for this problem. JimN

If you have to keep playing with the choke until the engine is warmed up a bit, then do it. Most of these old Farmalls are just that way, and there is nothing wrong. Especially if it runs good when it IS warmed up.

Thanks for the Help

I tried adjusting the carb but that didn't do nothing but make it run worse. I noticed that my distributor cap was not on like it should be there was a gap on the bottom of it. I took it off and made sure i had it lined up and it was.

I'm sure that caused a little problem. Could that be the problem?

I would certainly say so. Othewise, I vote for what JANicholson said - your're on the fringe of being too lean. mike

Sounds to me like a fuel issue. You should only have to mess with the choke for a minute or two (unless it's really cold) when you first start operating the machine and that's it. Sounds to me like you might have a restriction in the fuel system someplace or maybe water in it. Check your filter in the carb and if you have an inline filter replace it (some folks don't like em and will tell you to pitch them, but I've never had a problem with em and we have em on all our old gassers with no issues as long the filter is clean and not plugged up) You might also have some junk in the main jet on the carb as well.
