Starter switch/starter

Hey Folks; Need help with push-type starter switch for a Farmall "C". Either the switch or starter cuts out shortly after pushing the starter switch in. I can not crank for more than a couple of seconds before it cuts out. After releasing the starter switch I can push it in again but the same thing happens.Any help in appreciated, Thanks

Remove the Battery cable (one of them)
Remove the two screws holding down the switch.
Look at the copper lug sticking up under the switch.
If it is eroded away and pitted, a simple (temporary fix is to use a small rat tail file (or chainsaw file) and elongate the holes to allow the switch to move in the direction that allows the switch contact to be 1/16" closer to the lug. It may need to have a new lug installed (starter shops are equipped to do it, it is not a simple solder job. JimN

First of all the C has a rod that you pull to start the engine so yours must have been changed to what you have now. Better get something fixed or changed so its in the original state so we can help with how to fix the problem cause what you are describing you have a messed up starter control.

Edw: Follow Jim's advice, the new starter switches leave little to get excited about. I bought a new one, first replacement after 50 years. Used the file a few times in the 50 years.

After 3 months the new switch stuck, and ruined my battery. First time I ever had that happen.

Do as Jim says. When the starter switch is off, try touching the heavy battery cable to the starter contact to see if the starter turns.

One more item!! If you replace the switch, make sure you check the thickness of the metal where the bolts pass through to hold it on. If it is any thinner than the original (any) the bolts will go into the starter and short out the field. (this info from other posts on this forum)
Putting washers under the head of the bolt, or using appropriate shorter bolts works. (it is also a reflection of the lack of quality of some new parts. JimN
