Handbrake adjust IH 785

Please help. I purchased an IH 785 and need to adjust the handbrake and set the hydraulic raise response.
1. Handbrake
I have adjusted the cable to its max but no joy. It seems there are internal brake disks.
I have only dealt with conventional outar drum brakes where the brake shoes can be adjsted with a screwdriver through an inspecion hole.
Can someone please assist on how to adjust the handbrake.

2. Raise response
The hydraulic raise seems very difficult to set at a specific height. Its either a full lift or full drop action. I noted there are setscrews at the bottom of the raise/lower levers. How should I proceed?

Thank you

Hi Peet, I hate to be a bearer of bad news but sounds like someone drove the tractor with the parking brake engaged. This is a common problem on this make of IH tractor. The idiot light for parking brake burns out and operator drives away with parking brake on. The x95 series has a flashing parking brake light on the dash. Problem is the parking brake is a band around a drum in the rear transmission and when driven with the brake engaged it chews the friction coating on the band to bits and scores the drum.
The next problem is these bits of band get into the hydraulic system and clog the hydraulic filter and sometimes into the MCV valve causing it to malfunction.
See http://caseih.com/home.aspx?RL=ENNA then search for parts then model 784 page 04-5 has parking brake.

Re hydraulic, I assume you are talking about 3pt hitch? If you are not using a plow or cultivator make sure the draft control lever is fully forward and use the raise/lower lever to control height of 3pt. If you are using a plow or cultivator push the raise lower lever forward and adjust depth with draft control lever. There is a raise/lower response control lever by PTO lever it controls the lift and drop speed of the 3pt.

Hi Jim,

Thank you very much for your info, it all makes makes sense. The haydraulic steering cylinder was "lazy" and I thought the filter and oil needed to be replaced. When I removed the filter (just below the gear levers (on the LHS of driver seat) there was a black "carboard like" flaky deposit on the filter. Obviously this was the friction material of the drum band.

Thank you for your info on the levers - Yes I was referring to the 3pt hitch. I will certainly try it out as you suggested. I have used the raise response lever but it seemed that it had no effect. I mosly use a grass mower and hence the need for height control.

I got the tractor in a fairly bad condition and have been restoring it (not opened the engine or transmission yet)
The work was mostly on waterpipes / waterpump / tyres / paintwork and electrical.

I am not sure what the exact model is. I looked at many pics on external_link but maybe you could help.

I think it could be a 684 744 or 844 as it has the Neuss engine.
The colour scheme is similar to a 784 but the grille is different with the headlights located at the bottom of the grille and not on top.

I want to purchase a workshop mannual but am not sure which one - Perhaps the IH 202 book ??

I would appreciate any advice / comments. I can mail some pictures to you - my email is [email protected]

Thank you for your assistance

If you're in europe it likely is a 785, they came out around 1982 and were sold until being replaced by the 795 in 1991. D246 4 cyl engine.

The 785 was never sold in North America, the 784 from 1978 to 1985 was the same tractor as the euro 784/785 in that time period. For what ever reason CIH dropped the "784" size tractor in North America, likely due to there only being 10 PTO HP between the 685 (62) and 885 (72), so the 67 PTO HP was sort of redundant.
