power steering

After this last weekend driving the M to a show and back 30 miles RT and loading another tractor on the trailer to pull behind, My arms are sore. I would like to know how and what it takes to add power steering to the M.. Its a 51 and has belly pump. Appreciate ccomments Thanks Henry

Henry: It's going to take a pump and a motor. There were two systems, plus I'm sure a number of home-made inventions. The two systems are Behlen and Char-Lynn. Char-Lynn is the more attractive system as it is hidden under the hood for the most part. It uses an eaton belt driven pump. You'll have to add a sheave to the crank pulley and cut your fan shroud. You also cut the steering shaft. You can buy the system new, or find a used outfit on ebay or perhaps at a big tractor meet.
The Behlen system mounts above the gas tank inline with the steering shaft, which must be cut. It uses its own pump mounted between the distributor and front engine cover. Or, if you have a live hydraulic pump, you can plumb it with a priority valve using the existing live pump. Behlen units are also seen for sale on ebay.
Both are excellent units. Expect to pay $400 to $600 for a used complete unit. Lord knows what you'll pay for a new Char-Lynn. mike
