Adding Behlen PS to 1951 M w/live hydraulic on distributor

I recently bought a nice complete Behlen power steering unit thinking the pump would fit behind my live pump. However, there does not appear to be enough space for it and the distributor ahead of the oil filter. Would one of the vertical distributors solve this issue or am I out of luck? Number on PS unit is 2010-18, pump is 2011-11 and tractor is FBK277372x1. I checked archives but did not find this addressed except with a proportioning valve off the live pump, but may have missed it. Thanks, Jerry

The Delco vertical distributor will probably give you the space needed, but since you already have the M&W live pump I think the addition of a proportioning valve would be the way to go.

Jerry,

If you already have a live pump, just add a priority valve between the pump's output and the original system. The "exhaust" port of the priority valve would then be the original system's "pump".

Plumb in the steering motor to that priority valve's regulated steering port and create a new route back to the sump for the steering motor's exhaust.

There is no need for the additional pump.

Thanks, Allen. It looks like the oil in the Behlen unit is a light clear hydraulic oil, however the live system on the tractor has 30 wt non-detergent in it. Do I switch the whole system over to the lighter oil? There is a loader on the tractor so I would need to figure out how to get rid of the oil in the cylinders, hoses to the back outlets and cylinder on the sickle mower if I need to do that. (I assume I don't want 30 wt in the steering unit). Rather than eliminating the pump, it almost seems like the vertical distributor is less of a issue, but I don't know if that definitely will work either.

Steering pump will go on piggy back and use IH distributor but spark plug wires are pretty tight at oil filter. There"s tractors around mounted that way. Uprite distributor makes it easier to service though.

Jerry:
As DSlater already wrote, both pumps will fit. The wires will be close to the oil filter cover, but this can be negated to some extent by replacing stock type spark plug wires with ones which have 90-degree terminals on the distributor cap end. That is the set-up I have on my SM. No problems. mike

Thanks for the help everyone. I'm going to try adding the 2nd pump piggyback and deal with the wiring. That seems less difficult than adding a proportioning valve and return line and changing out all the oil, since I already have the complete unit. Jerry

I have a Behlen set up on my M that was on it when I got it. It runs the behlen pump in front of the distributor and clears ok. They also used the pump to drive the 3 point hitch which can cause the PS to temporarily go out. Kind of a pain in tight spots.
