Farmall A Adjustable Front Axle

The adjustable front axle on my Farmall A is rusted pretty tight on both side. How can I get the left and right tubes to telescope in and out of the front axle center section again?

Heat, and some banging.

It took some time to get mine apart. A good heavy hammer, a block of wood so you don't dent the legs (I know they're called something else but I'm blanking on it right now) and get the tube as hot as you can.

Buy a spray can of "PB Blaster" and spray it everywhere there is an opening and let it set a few days. Then try the heat and hammering. Available at most auto parts stores.

These things can be rusted in really tight. It will likely require a lot of heat as well as a big hammer and/or a puller rig setup of some kind. A propane torch will not be hot enough. I never did get my Cub front axle to come loose. A hydraulic portapower would not do it, even with heat from a torch. Finally the guy that does my welding had to split the back side of the outside tube with a grinder and spread it to get apart. He then rewelded and gound smooth. If I did not tell you, you would never know it was done.

Inside hitting out, you will want to jack up the side your working on.

Once you get it out I would take a wire brush and clean it up real well. I then greased the whole setup (never seize work work well too) and slide it back together. You will be blown away by how easy it goes back together.

The front end on my Super A was rusted pretty tight. I took the front end off the tractor (after soaking everything with PB Blaster) I chained one end to a tree and the other to a tractor and simply drove away. It took two pulls to get everything apart! Good luck, Greg

I hit a tree with my A once and it sheered off the two lock pins. The front wheel pivoted backwards. You could try removing the lock pins and bumping something solid in an attempt to twist the tube. There is a lot of leverage in the vertical portion of the axle going down to the wheel! I think twisting is much more effective than pushing or pulling.

Keep at it with the PB Blaster and the heat. You will eventually get it. Splitting the axle on the back like I did is a last resort.
