Farmall C exhaust pipe diameter?

does anyone know what diameter the pipe is that threads into the manifold? I need to get a pipe, but since I don't have my manifold yet, I figured i would ask here, so I can pick one up on the way home, tomorrow.

Thanks
John

John, Your new manifold may come with the pipe. The one I bought a couple years ago came with the pipe and the gasket. Good Luck PUTTER

Hey!

Thanks for the replies. I actually found a 5 foot section of 1 1/2 pipe in my basement. It still had the orange cap over the threads on both ends.

Unfortunately, it is all a moot point now. I went to drain teh oil, in preparation for starting it for the first time since I got it, and there was about a gallon of antifreeze in the oil pan.
I bought the tractor from a guy who rebuilt the engine last year. they fired it up, it was ticking loudly, they assumed a valve needed adjusted, and then he died. So, his son sold it to me. They couldn't have possibly known. Now, I don't know whether it has a crack in teh block, or the headgasket was not installed properly. The cylinder head has had a ton of work done to it, and every part looks brand new. The problem is, I got the oil pan off, and noticed that there is still red primer inside the block. So, they did not have the engine block dipped and magnafluxed.

So, we'll see... I am crossing every finger I have on this one.

Oh, nevermind... I have heard them called floating sleeves, but I know what you are talking about. they don't lock in the bore, they just slip in and slip out.

Well, a dry sleeve will fit inside a machined bore in the engine block, so coolant never touches this sleeve. This is what the H, M, and Supers, etc.. have.

A wet sleeve, however, is in direct contact with coolant. I've never had one apart, but I read here all the time of o-rings going bad or failing due to improper installation. The o-ring is at the bottom of the sleeve where is contacts the bottom of the water jacket. I believe the top of the sleeve is sealed by the water jacket. The A, B, and Cs will all have this engine.

To repair you'll have to pull the sleeve. A lot of guys pull the oil pan first and look inside to isolate the leak. The bottom of the sleeves ought to be visible.

you bounced about from exhaust and antifreeze in pan. antifreeze probably is there because o rings on bottom wet sleeves wern't changed or they ruined one during install. one try before tearing motor apart is to use mendtite block stop leak.this is a possible fix.

Thanks for the reply.

I have the engine tore down now, and can see what the problem is. On #3, it looks like they didn't have the sleeve squared tot eh block, and instead of taking a second look, they got a really big hammer and beat the snot out of it. they broke the casting. The top lip that creates the top of the o-ring groove is missing from 1/4 of the bore. Pieces of the broken lip were embedded in the seal, and it was torn badly.

So, it looks like I need new seals. I went ahead and removed all the other sleeves, just to be sure that none of the others were destroyed as well. So, now I have to wait for parts, and in teh meantime, get to cleaning up the sleeves for a smooth re-entry into the bores. I'll get some pictures, and post later.
