How to check coil on Super H

I have a SH and have a problem starting it with starter when cold. If you roll start it kicks right off. Go to the field runs fine cut it off and starts right back up with starter once you have started. On the initial start up, it acts like it's been flooded even though I start it at 1/4 throttle and no choke. This started about 1/2 way thru hay season.
I ponder if it is the coil? I had some low spark issues earlier and replaced points condenser and plugs.

Usually coils act up when they get warm.

Is it flooded ? Are you shutting the gas off overnight ? If not, if you do you shut the gas off, does it act the same ?

VA: Coils going bad always work when tractor is cold. The beginning of coils going bad, tractor stops or wont start when hot. After you leave them for 3/4 hour they will fire up. that is the sure sign of coil.

My thoughts on not starting cold, provided you know the problem is fire would be points, condencer or plugs. Could be plug wires, or cap.

Sounds like a coil going bad to me.

On a cold start the starter draws more current than when the engine is warm. More current = lower voltage to the coil. Lower voltage + weak coil = no start. That's why it fires right off when you roll start it - the coil gets full battery voltage then.

Suggest swapping in a known good coil and see what happens. Or put a crowbar in your wallet and replace it with a new one - about $15 at Autozone.

I'll add that a connection in the starting (heavy) cables , or a starter motor beginning to drag (worn bearings) can draw enough to prevent firing. JimN
