does anybody know if that steering wheel is threaded on or does it just supposed to pull right off? man it is on there good, from what someone told me my 154 was made in 1971 i need to get that off so i can replace some corroded wiring. any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Bill, it should pull off. I had to do the same thing for the same reason. It was a bear to come off. Ended up using a large hammer and broke off some plastic from the steering wheel.

I do not know if your steering wheel arrangment is the same as my older Cub. I used lots of penetrating oil (Parts Blaster), letting it soak for a few days, applying more several times a day. I used a brass hammer to tap the spokes of the wheel hoping that would help the PB migrate around the steering wheel post. Finally I used a two arm gear puller with washers to protect the center post from the pointy end of the gear puller. More PB, gradually tightening the gear puller, letting it soak, tapping with a brass hammer - and the wheel came off.
I hope this helps.

Patience is a virtue here. You don't want the steering wheel working loose or falling off while you're driving, so it's a tight fit to begin with. 30, 40, 50, or even 60 years later, and it's pretty much welded on permanently with corrosion.

The plastic coated steering wheel on this one presents a unique challenge, as you can't use heat without destroying the steering wheel. It may be necessary to bite the bullet, though, do what it takes to get the old wheel off, and replace it with a new one...

Lots of penetrant, lots of time, and a steering wheel puller. Hope you've got a day job to keep you occupied, and don't desperately need this tractor.

I used a bearing seperator and puller to get one off the other day that was stuck bad with no damage to the wheel or shaft.

Bill, I had the same situation on my 154. I took the nut off, used PB blaster several times, put some tension on it with my puller, then used a ball peen and tapped the top of the puller. It losened slightly, so I tightened a little more sprayed some more and it came right off. I have had to take it off 2 times since. I put some anti seeze on the splines and threads. I have been able to hand pull it with a rocking motion the last time. I hope yours goes that well.

If you decide to try a little heat I sugest that initially you try pouring BOILING water over it. It wont give it the heat that a torch would but it might be just enough especially if you put a puller on tight before applying the heat. Best of luck MTF

The boiling water idea is not bad at all. You don't run the risk of melting the plastic or anything else, but you're still applying heat.

If you remove the steering wheel once a year as a maintenance item, and the tractor is shedded or well tarped, it won't get stuck on like that, but who has time to remove the steering wheel once a year just in case?
