Cub battery cable length?

The negative battery cable which came with my '49 Cub will not reach between the battery and starter when it is routed beneath the driver platform. How long is that cable supposed to be?

My battery box looks different from any other I have seen - in pictures. It has a 1 1/2 inch hole near the top left side toward the front. It is one piece (no removable front). The cable hole seems to be just above the PTO lever.

Anyway, I sand blasted the box and lid, primed and painted them, cleaned the paint away from the lock washer location, cleaned the bolts and lock washers, and reassembled to the Cub using dielectric grease. Ohm meter indicates good contact. I bought a 6 volt battery today from Car Quest company.

I would use a measuring tape to get a length and I would use 00 cable for the 6 volt system too.
I would use soldered ends too. Hal

Wow, that is longer than I thought. I guess 0 gauge is the right size wire to carry the amperage. I will ask the local auto shop to get me seven feet of 0 gauge wire and then do my best to crimp and solder the ends onto it.

I bought a ready made cable for my Cub at NAPA or TSC, don't remember which. I think it is a 1 gage cable. I think the 1 gage is more than sufficient for the Cub. At least it works for me and mine is 6 volt. Also, some of the NAPA stores will have the crimper set up to custom make battery cables so you won't have to fool with doing that part yourself.

I looked on the TSC web site and they show a cable too short (not 84 inches). The local NAPA store has been able to get tractor parts and sometimes has them in stock. I was concerned about crimping the connectors to bare cable without proper tools. Thank you for the tip. I will visit the NAPA store - if they don't have something, I get to pay for it up front before they will order it.
Just for fun I am going to use the existing cables to determine whether the engine will turn over and soon will try to start the tractor. This afternoon (99 degrees) I removed the valve cover and am studying whether to remove the carburetor to easily get at the valve adjustments. As soon as that is done I will use the new gasket and replace the cover, then make the auxilliary fuel delivery set, check the points and rotor, clean commutators, and see whether I can start the engine.
