Farmall H - Replacing 5th Gear

My Farmall H's 5th gear will not engage. I replaced the "lockout bolt" and that didn't seem to do anything. The gear will grind bad and move about a foot in 5th gear before it pops back into neutral. I was wondering how hard it was to replace (or get to for that matter!) the gears. i.e.- Would I have to remove the gas tank, steering wheel/shaft, etc.? Thanks for any tips or information I should know about.

To replace the 4th/5th slider gear you will have to remove the top cover, remove the belly pump, remove the transmission imput shaft that couples the engine to the tranny, remove the constant mesh gear assembly from the front of the transmission, remove the bearing off the end of the top shaft and then the gear can be slid off.

It sounds worse than it is to get into the transmission. Hardest part is handling the belly pump because it's so heavy and not much to hold onto.

Could be all you need are shims or a new pilot bearing rather than the gear itself.

Thank you both very much. Now I know that this will be my winter project since I still use this tractor with haying throughout fall.
