I'll be at the Rock River Thresheree this weekend myself. Sunday is what we are shooting for. Can't wait to eat all the butter slathered sweet corn! Mmmmmmmmmmm!

Nice pictures. Back in the late 1940's I followed one of those thresher's. Our neighbor had a 15-30 McCormick Deering tractor and he did custom threshing. Fed you like a king too. Hal

Reminds me of the days when I first got to be a part of the crew at 7 years old. We had two binders, one for binding and the other being fixed. Horses pulled them. In the late summer we were on the thrashers calendar and each farm had to send several men to work the day . Ate like a pig because you got so hungry.
When we got our first tractor the horses were taken to the field in case the tractor had a problem All this only 70 years ago Henry

Kevin: Thanks for sharing those nice photos. Nice countryside, where are you located? Does the guy in charge of the thresher make his crew chew tobacco?

Bit of overkill on the binder, don't you think? Friend of mine once belted his 656 diesel up to one of the last and largest steel threshers IH built. He then pulled and wagon loads of sheaves up on each side and chalanged the 4 best men in the community to stump thresher or tractor, which ever would occur first. Several teams of 4 tried it, but thresher and tractor just kept taking it.

They still belt that thresher up every fall for a few loads, current owner has a Deere 70 diesel and a WD9. They still chalange teams of 4 to stump it. Men aren't in as good physical shape as they once were.

Don't have any tobacco chewers on the crew. I'm happy when I get anough help to get it done. We are located in centrial MN. The tractor size was the best chose for a first time binder operator. I wasn't alive when they were used so it was a learning experiance.(live power and hydro helps).

Kevin: Again, very nice country side. Seven years ago, I vowed to see as much of the farm country side within 500 miles of the Great Lakes as I could before I die. Must mark central MN on that priority list.

I could understand binding with live PTO, plus some of those binder functions could be done with hydraulics. My binding days were Transmission PTO and strong arm lever function.

You've got to get your threshing crew chewing tobacco. The old timer I know insists all his threshing crew chew. I think he's more interseted in who can hack the tobacco, rather than threshing.
