timing marks wont line up with pointer

Hi everyone, my 1942 farmall H, with 6 volt mag, starts right up, but when i stand on the mag side and use a timing light, the mag wont move enough to line up the timing marks on the pointer when the engine is running at low low idle. What can be done to line them up? the engine sounds better smoother already, but I want to get it right on. Do I need to replace the timing chain? How do I do that? Any ideas out there to help me through this? Thanks, Rich

Nothing is farther from the need. No timing light is used. the timing is set by setting the slow cranking (hand cranking) instant of tripping of the impulse coupling to the timing mark. The tractor starts and advances to the run setting automatically. A check could be madr with a degree wheel or degree tape of the correct diameter, but it is not done. JimN

Rich,

You might be getting a little carried away. Strobe lights certainly existed, but I don't believe anything like a timing light was at all common in 1939. Even vacuum tubes were relatively new. Quite a few farms were just getting electricity.

The timing marks are for static timing. Once the tractor is running, the mark and the pointer will start to move apart.

You will have a hard time changing the timing chain cause there aint none. Once the mag fires on TDC and runs it will go to around 34 deg advance and turning the mag doesent change the timing.
