F20 bottom end

My grandfather just bought an F20. I removed the porthole covers after we noticed it had a very distiguishable knock in the bottom end. Found that number 4 was loose at the crank, and all the rod bolts you were able to move them around with your bare fingers. This is the first time I have been inside of one of these motors. The rods have removable bearings. Being I don"t know much of these motors, the caps do have shims in them. My question is, what do you torque the rod caps at? I"d like to plasti-gauge the rods to find out how much clearance there is. Thanks for any input!!

No torque specs but I suggest you use plastigage to measure the clearance. Keep it between .003 and .005. Use the shims to adjust the clearance accordingly. 40 to 50 is appropriate torque.

IH,Scott is very close,Through the years the crank becomes out of round,so plastic gage can be miss-leading,.oo3 might be a little tight if the top and bottom is wore more than the sides of the crank. The original books state that you should be able to tap them from side to side with a small hammer.Ive dont them both ways with good success,Just use common sense these motors are simple and very forgiving.

Thanks guys for the input! Hopefully I can get the old girl back together so my grandfather can take it to the show next weekend and play around with it. I know he's axious being it's been around 65 years since he has operated one. Once again thanks!!
