Woods 59 Belly Mower Question

Know a guy who has a used Woods 59 belly mower for sale that he used on his Cub. Has all the mounting hardware/lift lever/manual. Question is... will his Woods 59 Belly mount hardware work on a Farmall A? Or am I dreaming...

I may be remembering wrong, but i believe i was told by an old IH dealer there is a difference in the pto rotation on a cub vs an A so you cannot use a 59 mower for a cub on an A.

The Cub and Farmall A PTOs are not the same. The Farmall Cub rotates CCW at engine RPM, the numbered series Cubs at about 2000RPM CCW and the Farmall A roates CW at 540 RPM.
The Woods mowers are fairly universal with mounting kits for different applications.

To get the straight story go to Woods for the answer.

My memory might be a little rusty, but all I think you need to do is twist the belt before you put it on the drive pulley. I thought the one we had for a Super A was a Woods 59. The mounts might be a little different.

Sorry is wont work the mounting assy is different and the A powers the mower off the belt pulley and the cub runs off the pto shaft. Woods will want a big price for the mount on an A.

Gene's right. The mounting and drive are completely different. You'd need a 24" pulley to power the mower off of the PTO shaft of an A-series farmall. That's why it's powered off the belt pulley.

I think you can still get new parts, but when you see what it costs, you'll probably lose your lunch.

Dont worry about rotation as all you do is change the belt on the spindles for reverse rotation same belt. If you want left hand throw get left blades and change the belt on the spindles. I sell WOODS and mount on the A,B and C TRACTORS.

The mowers are the same, but the mounting hardware is entirely different and the Cub mounting won't fit on the A at all. You could buy new hardware for the A from Woods, but it's gonna cost you a bundle. You might try some salvage dealers to see if you can locate the parts you need. Also, I don't believe Gene is correct in saying you only need to change the belt to reverse the mower direction. The left and right hand mowers have different spindles. The blade mounting bolts on the left hand mowers are left hand thread and on the right hand mowers right hand thread. If you just reverse the rotation without changing the spindles, the blades won't stay tight, a dangerous situation. I once got confused on the belt arrangement on my L 59 mower on my 140 and ended up with reverse rotation. Since the blades were turning backwards, it would not mow very well at all, but before I figured out the problem one of the blades came off due to the reverse rotation. Fortunately, no damage or injury, but could have been

You can't just change the belt and the blades. You must change the spindles as well. The left hand mowers have left hand thread blade bolts and the right hand mowers have right hand thread bolts. This makes them self tightening in operation. If you have the wrong spindles for your blade rotation, the blades will come loose and could fly off.

You are correct what i meant is the Cub rotation is backwards from what the A would be and they were worried about rotation of the blades. Yes the left hand blades and the cap screws get people mixed up. Had a local shop put left hand blades on a right hand mower and wondered why it didnt mow very good also have people put new belt on and get same results as the blades just dont cut very well running backwards if the belt aint on correct.
