The trans in my SH was quiet and completely functional prior to disassembly, no problems with fifth gear. I have replaced all bearings and am debating what if anything I should do with the 4th/5th sliding gear. As I assume is typical, the fifth speed gear teeth are quite worn from bad shifting. I would say there is 60% of the tooth width left in the driven gear with only slight rounding of the edges on the drive gear. I've seen the sliding gear in the catalogs for the H but the SH is different (tooth count).
Suggestions? I've never seen one that slipped out of gear so I don't know if I should be concerned with 60% tooth width.

I rebuilt an SH transmission a few years back. It would not stay in 5th gear and the sliding gear had to be replaced. I think I got the gear from Steiner tractor. The gear is listed at $225 in their catalog. I would say that the teeth on the old gear were about 80 percent gone. There was not much left. It would still run in 5th gear, but you had to hold it in with the shifter if there was any load at all on it. You might be OK if you have 60 percent remaining on the teeth, but it's such a job to replace that gear, I'd be tempted to go for a new gear while the transmission was apart.
